3 Books that should be on your writing desk if you’re serious about writing better sentences

  1. It Was the Best of Sentences, It Was the Worst of Sentences by June Casagrande - Funny, funny, funny. Yes, it’s a “manual” on craft, but it’s an instructive AND enjoyable read.

  2. Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style by Virginia Tufte - Lots of great examples of beautifully written sentences and how their construction and meaning work.

  3. How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One by Stanley Fish - Fish’s name is synonymous with English Lit classes. This book is a fantastic resource for writing sentences AND reading and appreciating them.

Bonus:

  • Sin and Syntax by Constance Hale - This was my first book on craft. An oldie but a goodie.

These books are all about one specific aspect of writing: the sentence.
