When I’m writing…

When I’m writing a first draft of a story I focus on two things:

1. getting the story out of my head and onto the page as fast as I can;

2. using my outline as guardrails.

For me, revising a sentence, an exchange, a scene, or an act is par for the course.

But if I have to do wholesale rearrangement of the structure of my story, then I’m on stuck on an island without a boat.
