Who’s there?

Who’s there?
— Hamlet 1.1.1

My favorite first line of dialogue (or even first line of a story).

Two simple words, and yes I know there’s a contraction.

Yet, for an entire play we’re trying to figure out who is actually there.

Who are these characters?

David Tennent calls it the longest knock-knock joke.

I’m laughing at my own inability to write two simple words with such intent and purpose.
